Lung Cancer Mortality Rate
Posted on 7/29/2011 by ridoscoot
Lung cancer is a disease characterized by uncontrolled cell growth in lung tissue. If untreated, this growth could spread outside the lung in a process called metastasis to nearby tissue and, eventually, to other parts of the body.
The survival rate can be calculated by different methods for different purposes. Survival rates presented here are based on the relative survival rates. In most cases, statistics refer to the level of 5-year survival. Level 5-year survival is the percentage of people living 5 years after diagnosis of lung cancer, if they have little or no signs or symptoms of lung cancer, free of disease, or receiving treatment for lung cancer.
Factors Affecting Survival rates Lung Cancer In general, the survival rate of lung cancer will depend on:
* Stage of lung cancer (see Stages of Lung Cancer)
* Lung cancer types (see Types of Lung Cancer)
* Are there any symptoms (such as cough or difficulty breathing)
* The patient's general health
Whether the cancer has just been diagnosed or has recurred (come back).
relative survival rate of lung cancer by race and sex:
* 13.4 percent for whites
* 17.4 percent for white women
* 10.5 percent for black men
* 14.5 percent for black women.
The survival rate of Lung Cancer Based on Phase
Stage lung cancer played a role in the survival rate for lung cancer. Based on historical data:
* 16 percent of lung cancer cases are diagnosed when the cancer is still confined to the primary site (local stage).
* 37 percent of lung cancer cases diagnosed after the cancer has spread to regional lymph nodes or directly beyond the primary site.
* 39 percent of lung cancer cases diagnosed after the cancer has metastasized (distant stage).
* 8 percent of lung cancer cases had staging information that is unknown.
5-year relative survival rates according to lung cancer are:
* 49.3 percent for local
* 15.5 percent for the region
* 2.1 percent for distant
* 7.9 percent for unstaged.
