New Treatments for Lung Cancer
An abundance of new treatments for lung cancer is being tested in clinical trials. Although several promising approaches to detection and treatment should be available to the public in the coming years, doctors still rely on methods for obtaining the best results in the general population.
Doctors prescribe a handful of methods of treatment depends on the stage of the cancer patient. There are specialties within each option, but are all from the treatment of surgery, chemotherapy or radiation. Lung Surgery can be performed in Phase 1, 2 or 3 patients, non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Before surgery, patients were assessed for good lung health and other abnormalities.
Depending on the severity of the cancer, a triangular wedge of tissue involved, a whole lobe or entire lung removed.
Chemotherapy is usually the first line treatment of advanced NSCLC and the second line treatment of NSCLC. Radiotherapy can be used in combination with any of these methods to precisely target and shrink the tumor. This method is often used with a malignant brain tumor, or near a vital structure or body.
Oncologists implementation of other technologies for cancer as appropriate. Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is the heating process and kill malignant cells with the RF current. The current travels through a needle inserted into the tumor. RFA does not require general anesthesia and is very fast.
The opposite of RFA is cryosurgery, in which malignant cells are frozen to death. Also known as Cryoablation is a new process that is being tested. The most common treatment option is laser surgery.
The intense light from a laser is precise and powerful enough to kill cancer cells. Unfortunately, this precision is better for palliative care. Radiologists use this therapy for symptoms associated with disease burden.
Ongoing clinical trials are testing a drug for lung cancer in a variety of populations. Tests are available to the banks of specific genes, some forms of cancer and in different age groups and lifestyles. Although participants may experience side effects, all experiments protected by heavy international regulations.
